Develop Godly Character

You are an ambassador for Christ. God expects us to develop godly character wherever we are so that, by our good works, sinners can come to Christ. Therefore, character is developed through faith, obedience to God’s word, prayer, and a life of holiness.

Faith is lacking when character is missing, and a man cannot please God without faith. Therefore, if you really want to please God, you need to develop godly character.

What is Charater?

Character is the sum total of who you are. It is built upon values, integrity, and moral principles that shape our lives. It’s who you are in the dark. Character is essential to our growth as human beings.

What matters to God? It’s the reflection of your character when no one is looking; the decisions you make when faced with adversity, and the courage it takes to stick to your convictions.

Character is something that cannot be bought; it must be built upon a strong foundation.

develop godly character

As ambassadors of Christ, it is essential that we strive to live our lives according to God’s will and example. It is also critical that we lead our children in the same way and let them see themselves as representatives of God wherever they’re found.

Remember that children are a gift from the Lord; He gave them to you so that you can raise them for His own glory. This is key.

Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Proverbs 22:15.

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. Proverbs 29:15.

Children raised with godly character will live to fulfill their God-given destinies. They will impact lives positively, and by so doing, they will turn many to righteousness, which is a delight to God.

On the other hand, if we fail to raise our kids in the fear of the Lord, their God-given purposes are truncated, and the assignment that they are here to do will be affected.

As a child of God, always have it in the back of your mind that you are on earth for a reason. First of all, to serve God. And none of those plans can be accomplished outside of Christ.

To be in Christ, you must strive to develop godly character. Without character, everything goes. You cannot overcome temptation if your character is lacking. Nor can you discern the lies of the enemy and avoid them because your heart hasn’t been established on God’s word and godly principles.

Therefore, you need a good character if you’re going to live a victorious life. The future of the church and society depends on it. We need people with healthy characters for us to have a healthy society tomorrow. If a character is missing, success will be shortened. Success is the attainment of God’s plan for an individual.

Training Errors Made by Parents and Guardians

  1. Children have their way all the time.
  2. Training the children without knowing who is influencing them.
  3. Making children afraid of them due to their stern protections.
  4. Failing to correct them when they do wrong.

Eli made a similar mistake and was severely punished by God for his wrongdoing.

For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. 1 Samuel 1:13.

Parents must learn to correct their children when they notice them acting improperly.

Common Vices That Parents Need to Watch Out For

Bad habits are something parents are constantly dealing with. Therefore, you must continuously deal with these issues to help the child develop godly character.

1. Disobedience

Strive to teach the child obedience. The Bible says, “For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, and unholy.”

Therefore, watch out for your children’s ill behaviours and correct them early enough; do not leave them all to themselves.

If you fail to  develop godly character in them, they might become the allegory of the yam tubers growing unattended; soon, soil borne diseases affected them and truncated their growth. Please, please, please! Don’t be like that.

2. Stealing and cheating

Be aware of the kinds of movies that your children see. Know the friends they associate with and monitor their ways.

If you find them using figurative language that deviates from godly principles, rebuke them immediately and teach them what to say and what not to say.

Children are very good at copying what they see and hear. So, be quick to correct any inappropriate behaviour in your wards.

3. Telling lies

Most children learn how to tell lies from their parents, who indulge in the practice.

Parents must desist from this despicable behavior so that their children don’t copy them.

4. Getting along with bad company

No association leaves you neutral. As a mom or dad, you must know the kind of friends your children hang out with if you really want to develop godly character in them.

Again, no relationship ever leaves a person the same way they entered it. This is especially true for children whose minds have not yet fully developed.

Due to this vulnerability, parents must be aware of and involved in their child’s relationships, particularly those that appear dysfunctional from the start.

Children are fast learners, and as such, their parents must keep a watchful eye on the people they relate to so that they do not copy bad behaviors.

Jesus Developed Good Character as a Child and as an Adult

Our Lord Jesus Christ developed good character as a child. His parents were committed to his development as well. He worked on himself during his childhood and adult years.

As a child, he invested his time in studying the word of God and asking questions of those older than him, and as an adult, he separated himself a lot to seek God’s face through prayer and fasting. All of these aided his ministry, and Jesus is known today as a man of impeccable character.

In light of Christmas, you can devote yourself to studying God’s word and praying to Him to do for you what only He can do. Like Jesus, we must have the desire to grow up as people of good character. In the absence of anything else, our world needs it.

Therefore, as we enter the new year, you will need a strong character to overcome every work of darkness and the tricks of the enemy. You also need solid character during difficult times, sometimes caused by the systems of our world and those that are man made or even self imposed.

Jesus developed good character as a child and as an adult. As a child, Jesus was said to be advanced in his understanding of scripture and wisdom, and he was described as being filled with the Holy Ghost. All of this was possible because there was a desire, and God put in the work to achieve it.

Developing Godly Character in Children

How to mould character in children. Teaching children good character traits can be a challenging task for parents, but it is essential to helping them succeed

1. Catch them early for Christ’s sake.

Children need your own, unadulterated gospel. Remind them that Jesus died for their sins in order for them to live in righteousness. God wants us to live righteously for His own glory.

2. Teach them to honour and obey God’s word.

Tell them to read and meditate on the Bible all the time; doing so will help them develop godly character.

3. Avoid negative words.

Use positive words when speaking to your children. Do not use derogatory language toward your children.

4. Constantly intercede for them in prayers.

The Lord will deliver them from any bad behavior.

Parents are not immune to character flaws. So, you must understand what your kids are telling you and use that understanding to help you grow in godly character. As your child’s eyes watch “God’s character development,” be involved so that they can stay committed.
