Repentance is an important aspect of the salvation process, as it involves a turning away from sin and a turning towards God. In the Bible, we see numerous examples of people who repented of their sins and turned to God for forgiveness. David, after his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah, repented and asked God to create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him (Psalm 51:10). The people of Nineveh, after hearing Jonah’s warning of impending destruction, repented and turned to God, causing Him to relent from his judgment (Jonah 3:10).
Jesus himself emphasized the importance of repentance in his preaching, declaring, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). He also told the story of the prodigal son, who recognized his sinfulness and returned to his father, who welcomed him with open arms (Luke 15:11–32).
It is important to note that repentance is not just a one-time event but a continual turning away from sin and toward God. As we grow in our relationship with God, we become more aware of the ways in which we fall short of his standards, and we are called to repent and turn to him in humility and contrition.
