What is Evangelism?
What is Evangelism? Unleashing the Transformative Power of Christs Love
Understanding Your Call to Share the Life-Changing Gospel of Jesus Christ
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." - Mark 16:15 (KJV)
Evangelism is the heartbeat of Christianity—the divine calling to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to a world lost in sin and darkness. It is not merely a religious activity or a church program, but the passionate overflow of hearts transformed by Gods grace. Evangelism is sharing the life-saving message that Jesus Christ died for sinners, rose from the dead, and offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
The word evangelism comes from the Greek word euangelion, which means good news or gospel. When we evangelize, we are announcing the best news the world has ever heard—that through Jesus Christ, sinners can be reconciled to God, forgiven of all sins, and receive eternal life. This message is not just important—it is urgent and essential for every person who has ever lived.
The Biblical Foundation of Evangelism
Evangelism is not a human invention or optional activity for Christians—it is a direct command from Jesus Christ Himself. Before ascending to heaven, Jesus gave His followers what we call the Great Commission:
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:19-20, KJV).
This command was not given only to apostles or pastors—it was given to all followers of Christ. Every believer has been commissioned to make disciples by sharing the gospel message. Jesus also declared, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8, KJV).
Notice that Jesus did not say we should become witnesses—He said we shall be witnesses. When the Holy Spirit fills us, witnessing becomes a natural expression of our faith. We cannot remain silent about what God has done for us through Christ.
âś“ The Gospel We Proclaim
The gospel is the good news that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). This is the message that saves—nothing more, nothing less. We must proclaim Christ crucified, buried, and risen.
Why Evangelism Matters
Understanding why evangelism is crucial motivates us to overcome fear, obstacles, and apathy in sharing our faith:
People Are Lost Without Christ
The Bible is clear that all people are sinners separated from God and destined for eternal judgment apart from Christ. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23, KJV). And "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23, KJV).
Without the gospel, people have no hope of salvation. They face eternal separation from God in hell. Jesus warned, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28, KJV). This sobering reality should compel us to share the gospel urgently.
Jesus is the Only Way of Salvation
In our pluralistic age, many believe all religions lead to God. But Jesus declared emphatically, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6, KJV). There is no other name by which people can be saved: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12, KJV).
If there were any other way to be saved, Jesus would not have needed to die on the cross. His sacrifice was necessary precisely because there is no other way. This exclusive claim is not narrow-minded—it is gloriously true and wonderfully inclusive, for Jesus offers salvation freely to all who believe, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or past sins.
God Commands Us to Evangelize
Evangelism is not optional for Christians—it is a command from our Lord. Jesus said, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark 16:15-16, KJV). Obedience to Christ requires that we share the gospel with others.
Paul wrote, "For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (1 Corinthians 9:16, KJV). Paul felt compelled by divine necessity to proclaim Christ. We should share this same sense of urgency and obligation.
People Cannot Believe Without Hearing
Paul asks a series of profound questions: "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?" (Romans 10:14-15, KJV).
The answer is clear: people cannot believe in Jesus unless they hear about Him. They cannot hear unless someone tells them. God has chosen to use human messengers to spread His gospel. We are His ambassadors: "Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20, KJV).
âś“ The Urgency of Evangelism
Death can come suddenly, and after death there is no second chance for salvation (Hebrews 9:27). Today may be someone's last opportunity to hear the gospel and be saved. "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2, KJV).
The Content of Our Message
What exactly should we proclaim when we evangelize? The message must be faithful to Scripture:
All Are Sinners
We must begin by helping people understand their spiritual condition. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23, KJV). People need to recognize they are sinners who have broken Gods law and stand condemned before a holy God. Without this understanding, they will not see their need for a Savior.
Sin Brings Death and Judgment
We must explain the consequences of sin. "For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23, KJV). This includes both physical death and eternal spiritual death—separation from God in hell forever. God's holiness demands that sin be punished, and His justice requires judgment for every transgression.
Christ Died for Our Sins
The heart of the gospel is the cross. We must proclaim that Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, died as a substitute for sinners. "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him" (2 Corinthians 5:21, KJV). Jesus bore our sins on the cross and suffered the punishment we deserved.
"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed" (1 Peter 2:24, KJV). Christ's death was not merely an example or inspiration—it was a substitutionary sacrifice that paid the full penalty for sin.
Christ Rose from the Dead
The resurrection is essential to the gospel. Paul writes, "And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain" (1 Corinthians 15:14, KJV). Without the resurrection, there is no salvation, no forgiveness, no hope. But Christ did rise from the dead, proving His victory over sin and death.
Salvation is by Faith Alone
We must be clear that salvation is received by faith in Christ alone, not by works. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9, KJV). Salvation is a free gift that cannot be earned through religious activities, moral improvement, or good deeds.
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31, KJV). Faith means trusting in Christ alone for salvation—casting yourself entirely upon His finished work on the cross rather than relying on your own efforts.
Repentance is Necessary
True salvation includes repentance—turning from sin to God. Jesus commanded, "Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3, KJV). Peter preached, "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out" (Acts 3:19, KJV). Repentance is not a work that earns salvation—it is the heartfelt acknowledgment of our sin and willingness to turn from it to follow Christ.
Methods of Evangelism
While the message must remain constant, the methods of sharing the gospel can vary:
Personal Evangelism
This is one-on-one sharing of the gospel with individuals. Jesus spoke privately with Nicodemus (John 3), the woman at the well (John 4), and many others. Philip shared the gospel with the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8). Personal evangelism allows us to address specific questions and concerns while building relationships.
Public Preaching
The apostles frequently preached the gospel publicly to crowds. Peter preached to thousands at Pentecost (Acts 2), Paul preached in synagogues and marketplaces (Acts 17), and Philip preached in Samaria (Acts 8). Public proclamation reaches many people simultaneously and demonstrates boldness for Christ.
Lifestyle Evangelism
Our changed lives should reflect Christ and create opportunities to share the gospel. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16, KJV). However, living a good life alone is not evangelism—we must verbally proclaim the gospel message. Our lives should open doors for our words.
Written and Digital Evangelism
In our modern age, we can use writing, websites, social media, and other digital tools to spread the gospel widely. The apostles wrote letters that spread the gospel beyond their immediate reach. We can use technology to proclaim Christ to people we may never meet face-to-face.
! Do Not Compromise the Message
In our desire to be accepted, we must not dilute or compromise the gospel. We cannot omit sin, judgment, hell, or the exclusivity of Christ to make the message more palatable. Paul warned, "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8, KJV).
Overcoming Obstacles to Evangelism
Many Christians struggle to share their faith. What hinders us, and how can we overcome these obstacles?
Fear of Rejection
We fear that people will reject us if we share the gospel. But Jesus warned, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul" (Matthew 10:28, KJV). We must fear God more than man. Remember that rejection of the gospel is not rejection of you personally—it is rejection of Christ. Our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim the message; the results are in Gods hands.
Feeling Inadequate
We may feel we lack knowledge or eloquence to effectively share the gospel. But God uses ordinary people: "For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise" (1 Corinthians 1:26-27, KJV). You do not need seminary training—you need to know Christ and be willing to tell others what He has done for you.
Not Knowing What to Say
Some Christians hesitate because they do not know how to explain the gospel clearly. The solution is simple: study Scripture, learn the basic gospel message, and practice sharing it. Memorize key verses like John 3:16, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, and Ephesians 2:8-9. Ask other believers to role-play gospel conversations with you until you feel more confident.
Lack of Opportunities
We may claim we have no opportunities to share the gospel. But opportunities are all around us—we simply need eyes to see them. Pray that God will open doors and give you boldness: "And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel" (Ephesians 6:19, KJV).
The Power Behind Evangelism
We do not evangelize in our own strength or wisdom. The gospel itself contains divine power:
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16, KJV). The gospel is not merely good advice—it is Gods power to save sinners. When we proclaim it faithfully, God works through His Word to bring conviction, repentance, and faith.
The Holy Spirit empowers our witness. Jesus promised, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me" (Acts 1:8, KJV). We must depend on the Spirit to give us boldness, wisdom, and the right words. He convicts sinners of their need for salvation: "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment" (John 16:8, KJV).
Remember that salvation is Gods work, not ours. Paul writes, "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase" (1 Corinthians 3:6-7, KJV). We plant seeds and water them, but only God can bring spiritual life. This should both humble us and encourage us—the results depend on Gods power, not our eloquence.
🙏 Prayer for Boldness in Evangelism
"Lord Jesus, thank You for saving me and calling me to be Your witness. Forgive me for the times I have been silent when I should have spoken. Give me boldness to proclaim Your gospel without fear or shame. Open doors of opportunity to share Your love with those who need to hear. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me the words to say. May many come to saving faith through my testimony. For Your glory I pray, Amen."
The Joy and Rewards of Evangelism
Despite its challenges, evangelism brings tremendous joy and eternal rewards:
"And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever" (Daniel 12:3, KJV). Those who lead others to Christ will shine like stars forever. What greater reward could there be than knowing you were used by God to rescue someone from hell and bring them to eternal life?
Jesus said, "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance" (Luke 15:7, KJV). When someone comes to Christ through your witness, heaven celebrates! You participate in the joy of angels and share in Gods delight over repentant sinners.
Paul testified of his converts, "For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? For ye are our glory and joy" (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, KJV). Those we lead to Christ become our joy and crown—our reward at Christ's return.
Your Call to Action
Every true believer in Jesus Christ has been commissioned to share the gospel. You may not be called to preach to thousands, but you are called to witness to those in your sphere of influence—family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even strangers God brings across your path.
Ask yourself: When was the last time I shared the gospel with someone? Do I have a burden for lost souls? Am I praying for opportunities to witness? Am I prepared to explain the gospel clearly when opportunities arise?
Do not wait until you feel fully prepared or perfectly qualified. God uses willing vessels, not perfect ones. Start today by praying for boldness, learning to articulate the gospel message clearly, and watching for opportunities God provides.
Remember Jesus' words: "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest" (Matthew 9:37-38, KJV). The world is ready for the gospel—will you be one of Gods laborers?
All Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV) of the Holy Bible. May God give you boldness to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world. Lives hang in the balance, and eternity is at stake. Go forth as Christ's ambassador and unleash the transformative power of His love through faithful evangelism.
