Walking in the Power of God: The Role of Purity, Purpose, and Alignment
Walking in the Power of God
Unlocking Divine Power Through Purity, Purpose, and Alignment
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." - Acts 1:8 (KJV)
Every believer in Jesus Christ has access to the same power that raised Christ from the dead. This is not a promise reserved for a select few—it is the birthright of every child of God who walks in obedience, purity, and divine alignment. Yet many Christians live far beneath their spiritual privileges, experiencing defeat where they should walk in victory, weakness where they should demonstrate strength, and powerlessness where they should manifest God's supernatural enabling.
The question is not whether God's power is available, but whether we are positioned to receive and operate in it. Walking in the power of God requires three essential elements: purity of heart, clarity of purpose, and alignment with His will. These are not optional extras for the spiritually elite—they are foundational requirements for every believer who desires to live the supernatural life that Jesus promised.
The Foundation: Understanding God's Power
Before we can walk in God's power, we must understand what it is and how it operates. The Greek word for power in Acts 1:8 is "dunamis"—the root word from which we get "dynamite." This is explosive, transformative power that changes lives, transforms circumstances, and advances God's kingdom on earth.
"And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 1:19-20, KJV)
This same resurrection power dwells in every born-again believer through the Holy Spirit. Paul declares: "But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you." (Romans 8:11, KJV)
Biblical Truth
God's power is not given for personal glory or self-promotion. It is entrusted to those who will use it to advance His kingdom, demonstrate His love, and bring glory to His name. Every miracle Jesus performed pointed people to the Father and revealed the character of God.
The First Requirement: Purity of Heart
There is an inseparable connection between purity and power. God's power flows through clean vessels. Throughout Scripture, we see that those who walked in the greatest manifestation of God's power were those who maintained purity in their lives.
"Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8, KJV)
Purity begins with the heart—not merely external behavior, but the inner motivations, desires, and thoughts. Jesus addressed this when He confronted the Pharisees: "Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess." (Matthew 23:24-25, KJV)
What Does Purity Look Like?
Purity is not perfection—it is a heart that quickly repents when convicted of sin and maintains a holy fear of offending God. Consider the following characteristics of a pure heart:
Hatred of Sin: "Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked." (Psalm 97:10, KJV) A pure heart doesn't flirt with sin or see how close it can get to the edge without falling. It runs from even the appearance of evil.
Quick Repentance: David, called a man after God's own heart, sinned grievously. But when confronted by the prophet Nathan, he immediately repented: "I have sinned against the LORD." (2 Samuel 12:13, KJV) His prayer in Psalm 51 reveals a heart that valued purity: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10, KJV)
Transparency Before God: "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." (Psalm 66:18, KJV) Hidden sin blocks our prayers and grieves the Holy Spirit. Purity requires bringing everything into the light before God.
Practical Application
Examine your life daily. Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and reveal any area that grieves Him. "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:23-24, KJV) What He reveals, immediately confess and forsake.
The Second Requirement: Clarity of Purpose
God does not give power indiscriminately. His power is given for specific purposes—primarily to advance His kingdom and testify of Jesus Christ. When Jesus promised power in Acts 1:8, He immediately defined its purpose: "ye shall be witnesses unto me."
Many believers desire God's power for the wrong reasons—for personal comfort, to impress others, or to validate their own importance. James addressed this: "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." (James 4:3, KJV)
The Purpose of Divine Power
To Testify of Jesus: Every miracle Jesus performed pointed people to His identity as the Son of God. When John the Baptist sent disciples to ask if Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus responded: "Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." (Matthew 11:4-5, KJV)
To Destroy the Works of the Devil: "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." (1 John 3:8, KJV) God's power breaks chains of bondage, delivers the oppressed, and sets captives free.
To Build Up the Church: "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." (1 Corinthians 12:7, KJV) Spiritual gifts and demonstrations of God's power are given to strengthen and build up the body of Christ.
To Bring Glory to God: "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31, KJV) The ultimate purpose of every display of God's power is that His name would be glorified and His character revealed.
Critical Warning
When we seek God's power for selfish purposes or personal glory, we follow in the footsteps of Simon the Sorcerer who tried to buy the Holy Spirit's power (Acts 8:18-20). Peter's rebuke was severe: "Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money." Check your motives before seeking greater power.
The Third Requirement: Alignment With God's Will
Walking in God's power requires living in constant alignment with His revealed will. Jesus modeled this perfectly: "Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God." (Hebrews 10:7, KJV)
Jesus could perform no mighty works in Nazareth because of their unbelief (Matthew 13:58). But everywhere He found faith and obedience to the Father's will, power flowed freely. He declared: "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." (John 5:30, KJV)
How to Walk in Alignment
Know God's Word: You cannot align with what you don't know. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalm 119:11, KJV) Saturate your mind with Scripture so you can recognize God's voice and distinguish His will from your own desires.
Maintain Intimacy Through Prayer: Jesus regularly withdrew to pray, maintaining constant communion with the Father. "And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." (Mark 1:35, KJV) Prayer keeps us aligned with heaven's priorities.
Obey Promptly: Delayed obedience is disobedience. When God speaks, immediate response demonstrates trust and keeps us in alignment. Abraham's example shows this: "So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him." (Genesis 12:4, KJV)
Surrender Personal Ambitions: Paul's testimony reveals complete alignment with God's purpose: "But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ." (Philippians 3:7, KJV) Walking in God's power requires laying down our own agendas.
Remember This
Alignment is not a one-time decision but a daily, moment-by-moment choice. Every morning, surrender your will to God's will. Throughout the day, pause to ask: "Am I walking in alignment with God's purposes right now?" This continuous recalibration keeps you in the flow of His power.
Biblical Examples of Walking in God's Power
Scripture provides numerous examples of men and women who walked in extraordinary power because they met these three requirements:
Elijah: This prophet's purity, clear purpose, and alignment with God enabled him to call down fire from heaven, raise the dead, and stop rain for three-and-a-half years. "And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word." (1 Kings 17:1, KJV)
Daniel: His commitment to purity—refusing to defile himself with the king's food—and his unwavering devotion to prayer positioned him to receive visions, interpret dreams, and survive the lions' den. "Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime." (Daniel 6:10, KJV)
Peter: After Pentecost, this once-fearful disciple walked in such power that his shadow healed the sick. "Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them." (Acts 5:15, KJV) His transformation came through the Holy Spirit's power, enabled by his surrender and obedience.
Paul: Despite his past as a persecutor of Christians, Paul's complete surrender to Christ's lordship positioned him for extraordinary power. "And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them." (Acts 19:11-12, KJV)
Practical Steps to Begin Walking in Power
1. Confess and Forsake All Known Sin: Don't let another day pass harboring unconfessed sin. "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13, KJV)
2. Seek the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: Jesus commanded His disciples to wait for the Spirit's power. "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." (Luke 24:49, KJV) Ask God to fill you afresh with His Spirit.
3. Commit to Soul-Winning: Align your life with the Great Commission. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." (Matthew 28:19, KJV) As you step out in obedience to share the Gospel, God will empower you.
4. Establish Daily Spiritual Disciplines: Prayer, Bible reading, worship, and fasting keep you connected to the source of power. "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." (Matthew 17:21, KJV)
5. Walk in Humility: Remember that power flows through you, not from you. "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." (James 4:6, KJV) Stay humble and give all glory to God.
Your Next Step
Don't wait for perfect conditions or until you feel "ready." Begin today by consecrating yourself to God, asking Him to reveal any areas of impurity, and surrendering your life completely to His purposes. As you step out in faith and obedience, you will discover that God's power is already at work within you.
The Promise Is For You
God's power is not reserved for spiritual giants or those with decades of ministry experience. It is available to every believer who will meet His conditions. Peter declared on the Day of Pentecost: "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." (Acts 2:39, KJV)
You may feel inadequate, unqualified, or too broken for God to use. But remember that God specializes in using weak vessels to display His strength. "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty." (1 Corinthians 1:27, KJV)
Your weakness is not a disqualification—it's an opportunity for God's power to be displayed. Paul learned this truth: "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (2 Corinthians 12:9, KJV)
Walking in God's power begins with a decision—a choice to pursue purity, embrace His purposes, and align your life with His will. It continues through daily surrender, persistent prayer, and faithful obedience. As you walk this path, you will discover that the same power that created the universe, parted the Red Sea, and raised Jesus from the dead is now at work in you.
Prayer of Consecration
Heavenly Father, I come before You acknowledging my deep need for Your power. I confess that I have often tried to live the Christian life in my own strength, and I have failed. Forgive me for every area of impurity in my life, for mixed motives, and for times when I have not been fully aligned with Your will.
Today I consecrate myself completely to You. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. I surrender my plans, my dreams, and my ambitions to Your purposes. Use me for Your glory. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit and empower me to be Your witness wherever You send me.
I ask not for power to serve myself, but for power to advance Your kingdom and bring honor to Your name. May Your power flow through me to heal the broken, deliver the captive, and bring the lost to salvation through Jesus Christ. I commit to walking in purity, pursuing Your purposes, and maintaining alignment with Your will every day of my life.
In Jesus' mighty name I pray, Amen.
