The Word of God exposes sin that we might not even realize is there. It reveals wrong attitudes, impure motives, sinful thoughts, and ungodly behaviors. Psalm 119:130 declares: “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” God's Word shines light into the dark corners of our hearts, revealing what needs to be confessed and cleansed. This conviction is not meant to condemn us, but to lead us to repentance and restoration.

When we read Scripture and feel convicted about something in our lives, this is the active power of God's Word at work. Don't resist it. Don't make excuses. Respond to the conviction with repentance. We think we're doing something for His glory when we're really seeking our own glory. God's Word exposes these mixed motives and reveals the truth about why we do what we do. This is painful but necessary. We cannot grow spiritually until we see ourselves honestly, and only God's Word can show us that truth.

This should make us approach Scripture with reverence and openness. Every time we read God's Word, we should pray: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). How does this apply to my life? What do I need to change because of this truth? Write down your thoughts. Pray over the passage. Let it saturate your mind and heart. Start by memorizing verses that speak to your current situation or need. Write them on cards. Review them throughout the day. Say them aloud. Meditate on them. Over time, build a storehouse of Scripture in your heart.
